Hypnosis is becoming widely accepted as an effective treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS
IBS is characterized by
recurrent abdominal
pain and discomfort, accompanied by changes in bowel functioning such as
diarrhea, constipation or a combination of both. In IBS, the gut's
function is not normal, but structural changes are not found. The
symptoms may be intermittent, and last for years. More predominant in
women than men, an estimated 10-15% of Americans suffer from IBS.
Hypnosis has been found to be very beneficial for sufferers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Determining if you have IBS:
Have symptoms been present for 6 months or more?
Are symptoms present at least 3 days each month for the past 3 months
Is the pain relieved by having a bowel movement?
Is the pain linked to how often you have a bowel movement?
Is there a connection between the pain and the appearance or consistency of your bowel movements?
If you've answered yes to most of the questions above, you may have IBS.
Hypnosis has been proven effective for sufferers from IBS
There have been many studies of the efficacy of hypnosis for IBS, and it
has become widely accepted among medical circles that hypnosis can
provide relief when nothing else has. In one study, Hypnosis and
irritable Bowel syndrome: A review of efficacy and mechanism of action,
by Gabriel Tan, D. Corydon Hammond, and Joseph Gurrala in 2005, the
findings state:
"hypnosis consistently produces
significant results and improves the cardinal symptoms of IBS in the
majority of patients, as well as positively affecting non-colonic
symptoms. When evaluated according to the efficacy guidelines of the
Clinical Psychology Division of American Psychological Association, the
use of hypnosis with IBS qualifies for the highest level of acceptance
as being both efficacious and specific."
Hypnosis is a proven effective complementary or alternative approach for IBS.
Hypnosis has been very successful in the treatment of IBS, and is
supported by numerous studies. Unlike the side effects of medications
that are used for IBS, there are no adverse side effects with hypnosis.
Everyone is able to experience the relaxed state of hypnosis. All of
the “chatter” that normally is going on in the conscious mind, quiets
down, and the mind/body connection is able to do it's perfect work to
correct itself and heal.
